Community's role in education is topic for upcoming meetings

Carlessta Yurko photoFix our schools. That's what we've been hearing from Detroiters involved in the Skillman Foundation's Good Neighborhoods work the past three years. America's Promise recently ranked the 50 largest U.S. school districts on high school graduation rates, and Detroit was rated worst. Our children deserve better.

The Skillman Foundation wants Good Schools for all Detroit kids. Other big-city school districts are making great strides in improving their high schools -- and Detroit can, too.

We want to help Detroit kids succeed in high school, graduate from college and lead productive lives as adults.

The Foundation will hold a series of neighborhood meetings, beginning next Tuesday, on how to fix Detroit schools. The meetings are targeted at residents of the Cody/Rouge, Brightmoor, Northend, Osborn, Chadsey/Condon and Vernor neighborhoods, but anyone may attend.

Detroit families will hear strategies for preparing kids to succeed in high school, graduate from college and lead productive lives as adults. Free dinner and child care will be provided.

Our children get one shot at getting a good education. It is the community's responsibility to make sure they succeed. Please join us at a neighborhood meeting. Kids matter here.

Fix Our Schools

Don't drop out on Detroit kids

The report card on Detroit's schools -- public and charter -- paints a grim picture for Detroit children. Too many schools are failing to prepare children to lead productive and meaningful lives as adults.

The Skillman Foundation examines what Detroit needs, such as high quality schools and stability, and how to get there.

Good Neighborhoods governance meeting is Dec. 6

The Skillman Foundation is calling on Good Neighborhoods residents to attend its second community governance kickoff meeting Dec. 6.

During the meeting, we'll be defining the purpose and process, sharing research from other communities, lifting up findings from the community listening project and discussing key governance issues.

The meeting will take place from 8:30 a.m.-noon Dec. 6 at Martin Luther King High School, 3200 E. Lafayette, Detroit. For more information, please click here.
